“Three ways are open to a man who is in sorrow. He who stands on a normal rung weeps, he who stands higher is silent, but he who stands on the topmost rung converts his sorrow into song.”
–– Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kotzk
We all suffer. We are also the only ones who can decide what to do with the sorrow caused by our suffering. Of course, we will all be on one of these sorrowful rungs at one time or another, but the Rabbi suggests that there can and should be a goal for all of us to turn our sorrow into song. What rung do you stand on?
